The Tate Modern is Renowned for Its International Modern and Contemporary Art
The Tate Modern in London is a member of a family of four art galleries with Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives, collectively known simply as Tate. The Tate Modern is located at 53 Bankside, London SE1 9TG (Telephone 020-7887-8888)
In the 1990s the Tate trustees acquired the disused Bankside Power Station in Southwark, which was originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, and converted it to the Tate Modern
The former Turbine Hall on level 1, which once housed the electricity generators of the old power station, now marks a breathtaking entrance to the Tate Modern. At the top of the building is a new two-storey glass roof which provides natural light into the galleries on the top floor, and also houses a delightful café.
Part of the former Tate Gallery’s modern collection was moved here and it was opened to the public in 2000 as the home of international 20th and 21st-century modern art.
The displays at this gallery include major works by Pablo Piccaso, Andy Warhol, Anish Kapoor, Henri Matisse as well as contemporary artists such as Dorothy Cross, Gilbert and George and Susan Hiller.
The layout of Tate Modern includes:
• Level 2 Gallery houses exhibitions of cutting edge contemporary art with exhibitions running for 2 – 3 months.
• Material Gestures (Level 3) – this focuses on abstraction and expressionism, including work by Claude Monet, Mark Rothko and Henri Matisse.
• Poetry and Dream (Level 3) – featuring sexually explicit drawings.
• Level 4 is used to stage the major temporary exhibitions for which an entry fee is charged.
• Energy and Process (Level 5) – including work by artists such as Jannis Kounellis, Ana Mendieta and Jenny Holzer.
• States of Flux (Level5) – including work by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.
Tate Modern also caters for family visits and school programmes to encourage pupils to explore their own responses to art works and increase their understanding of British and international art.

Mali W. I’m sorry I cant’ give away the store. Working forward from his Fauvist period Matisse became a post-impressionist.
For a new perspective look backward starting w/ the contemporary California artist Richard Diebenkorn, often called “the modern Matisse”
